Background of the Study
Emergency obstetric care (EmOC) is an essential component in the prevention of maternal mortality, addressing complications such as hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, obstructed labor, and infections, which are leading causes of maternal death. In Kogi State, as in many other regions of Nigeria, maternal mortality rates remain high due to limited access to emergency obstetric services, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient healthcare personnel. The establishment of functional EmOC services in healthcare facilities is key to saving the lives of women experiencing complications during pregnancy and childbirth (Olumide et al., 2023). However, the accessibility, quality, and effectiveness of EmOC services in Kogi State have not been systematically evaluated. This study aims to assess the role of EmOC in reducing maternal mortality in Kogi State by examining its availability, utilization, and effectiveness in responding to obstetric emergencies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve maternal healthcare, maternal mortality rates in Kogi State remain alarmingly high. One of the critical challenges in the region is the limited access to skilled care during childbirth, particularly in rural and remote areas. Emergency obstetric care services are vital for managing complications during labor and delivery, yet the availability and quality of these services are often compromised by inadequate healthcare infrastructure, poorly trained personnel, and logistical barriers. Evaluating the effectiveness of EmOC services in reducing maternal mortality in Kogi State is crucial to identifying areas for improvement and ensuring that more women have access to life-saving care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the availability and quality of emergency obstetric care services in Kogi State.
2. To evaluate the role of emergency obstetric care in reducing maternal deaths in Kogi State.
3. To identify barriers to accessing emergency obstetric care services in Kogi State.
Research Questions
1. What is the availability and quality of emergency obstetric care services in Kogi State?
2. How effective are emergency obstetric care services in reducing maternal deaths in Kogi State?
3. What factors limit access to emergency obstetric care services for pregnant women in Kogi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Adequate emergency obstetric care services are associated with a reduction in maternal deaths in Kogi State.
2. The quality of emergency obstetric care services is positively correlated with better maternal health outcomes in Kogi State.
3. Barriers such as transportation and inadequate healthcare infrastructure limit the accessibility of emergency obstetric care services in Kogi State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the availability, quality, and accessibility of emergency obstetric care services in Kogi State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing reliable data on maternal deaths and variations in the quality of services across different regions of the state.
Definitions of Terms
